Synopsis

Yisroel 'Izzy' Jonigkeyt, an about-to-be-married Lubavitcher Chassid from Brooklyn, travels to San Francisco to visit Marek Wisniewski, a Polish Catholic born in Warsaw. They intend to collaborate on a project which examines why manic art world iconoclast Harry Kierk intends to destroy his entire life's work, in a ritualistic weekend of art destruction. As the visit progresses, Izzy and Marek discover for the first time that complex historical baggage impinges on their curious friendship, which grows more and more tremulous and discomforting with each day. Marek's fragile relationship with his brusque and bigoted Americanized cousin Irek also begins to further obstruct his relationship with Izzy, as Irek is also their gateway for getting access to Kierk. As they delve deeper into their project as a means to distance themselves from their growing interpersonal issues, Izzy and Marek begin to understand, in their own respective ways, why Kierk is driven towards destruction.

Synopsis

Kate McCarthy, a former teen sitcom star who trashed her life through drug abuse, is forced to live, fresh out of rehab, on the one remaining piece of property, her business manager, Charlie has kept out of foreclosure - a run-down apartment building in east L.A. With her one remaining trendy friend, Claire, who's still an addict and trapped in a loveless marriage, they are both contemptuous of her new tenants. Walter, is a failed screenwriter, Suzanne, is a nurse trying to keep her teenage son, Jerome away from gangs, Carlos, is an overachieving physics major, Sam is a homeless man living on her front lawn and Mark, her divorced building manager, is getting his veterinarian degree from UCLA. Kate is in total isolation until her dog is wounded during a random drive by shooting. It's then that Mark jumps into action and with grudging support and brutal honesty helps Kate to get back on her feet.

Synopsis

When nine-year-old Rob Cole felt the life force slipping from his mother's hand he could not foresee that this terrifying awareness of impending death was a gift that would lead him from the familiar life of 11th-century London to small villages throughout England and finally to the medical school at Ispahan. Though apprenticed to an itinerant barber surgeon, it is the dazzling surgery of a Jewish physician trained by the legendary Persian physician Avicenna that inspires him to accept his gift and to commit his life to healing by studying at Avicenna's school. Despite the ban on Christian students, Rob goes there, disguising himself as a Jew to gain admission. Gordon has written an adventurous and inspiring tale of a quest for medical knowledge pursued in a violent world full of superstition and prejudice.
